Common questions
Straight answers about buying and selling trucking companies with MCDOT Sales.
Buying a company
Can I buy just an MC number?
No. An MC number can’t be sold or transferred on its own. You buy the company that holds it, usually by purchasing the company’s membership interest, and the authority, USDOT number and history stay with that company.
Why buy an aged authority instead of getting my own MC?
Many brokers and shippers won’t set up a carrier until its authority has been active for 6 months to 2 years. An aged company also gets you past the new-entrant monitoring period and often better insurance quotes, so you can start hauling loads sooner.
How do I know the company is clean?
Every listing shows authority age, inspections, out-of-service rate and crashes. After you sign an NDA you get the MC and USDOT numbers so you can verify everything yourself on FMCSA SAFER, plus data room access for insurance loss runs and other documents.
What happens to the seller’s past liabilities?
Liabilities from before the sale stay with the seller, as set out in the purchase agreement. Your due diligence period is the time to check for open claims, liens and unpaid debts. We recommend having your own attorney review the final agreement.
Deposits, escrow & transfer
How long does the whole process take?
Most deals close in 2–6 weeks: NDA and review, letter of intent and deposit, 14 days of due diligence, closing through escrow, then the FMCSA updates.
Is my deposit safe?
Yes. Your 10% deposit is held by Escrow.com, a licensed escrow company, not by MCDOT Sales. It’s refundable until your due diligence period ends.
Who pays the escrow fees?
The buyer pays all escrow fees, for both the deposit and the closing.
What do I need to change with FMCSA after I buy?
After closing, the company’s officers and contact details are updated with FMCSA and your own insurance is filed under the authority. We walk you through each filing.
Selling your company

How much does it cost to sell with MCDOT Sales?
Listing is free. We only earn a fee when your sale closes, paid from the sale proceeds at closing.
